A Cute and Simple Shark Room for Your Nursery Grad

Looking for a cute and simple room design for your nursery grad? I have some shark-tastic ideas for you! When my son graduated from his crib to toddler rails, I knew it was time for a redesign. I wanted something simple and tailored to his interests, but I also knew he’d be ready for his first big boy room in about a year.

He loved sharks and his favorite book was “Dude” by Aaron Reynolds, a story about a surfing platypus, beaver and shark who only say one word…”dude”. The illustrations were beautiful and my toddler loved that even he could “read” it. I used this book as my inspiration. The pages were full of beautiful hues of blue and orange which became my color palette.

I purchased a second “Dude” book and placed our three favorite pages in white matted frames, similar to these. I found the orange and blue surfing fabric on Etsy and had it made into a quilt which is still one of my son’s favorite blankets. To corral his never-ending stuffed animal collection, I purchased this shark hamper on Amazon which worked great. To top it all off, I put his two favorite Slumberkins on the bed, Hammerhead and Jellyfish.

Something that I love to add to every kids room I do, is a shelf where they can display what they want. Paintings, pictures, crafts or their favorite stuffed animal, it’s always fun to see what they choose. The driftwood shark came from Hobby Lobby and tied in more of those aqua and blue hues. I always seem to struggle with window treatments. I’ve never been a fan of curtains in a young child’s room so I always strive to find something else and what’s better for a shark room than a shark head? I placed some fishing net decorations I had leftover from previous parties behind the shark to add some more texture and interest.

Next, I brought in more of the surfing theme by adding these two art pieces from Hobby Lobby. I was lucky enough to find the shark lamp on Facebook Marketplace. It was originally gold but with a little sanding and spray paint, it fit in perfectly. The bean bag chair was a clearance find at Target. However, Amazon has a blue chair and a grey chair that are similar. The last thing needed was book storage. I used cube storage in his closet for his toys but I wanted his books to be easy to access. I love sling bookshelves for that very reason and Amazon has tons of different options to go with every theme, like this one. After adding one more wall decoration from Hobby Lobby and a colorful rug from Wayfair, his room was finished.

Overall, having a bright and simple room transitioning from a nursery worked out well for us. In a little over a year, his interests developed more and we eventually made a superhero room for him. However, he still talks about his shark room all the time.

I hope this has provided some inspiration and follow along for more ideas!
